CEFR describes skills in foreign languages

The CEFR-scale (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is an important tool for the language coach, both in choosing materials and the creation of the individual study-plan. With the help of the CEFR-scale the languages skills are specified between A1-C2. Level A1 equals a beginner level and C2 an advanced. We start each education with a skill test and perform a similar one at the end of the course if the student so wishes.
This way we can make sure that the education is planned correctly, and it also works as a receipt on how well you’ve developed during the span of the course.

How long does it take to learn a language?

It only takes a couple of days to learn simple phrases. To learn a language more thoroughly, both spoken and written, with good listening comprehension takes up to 1-3 years. For an academic level it takes at least 5-7 years. The amount of time depends on how many hours per week you spend on your studies, both by yourself and the time spent with a language coach. How much you surround yourself with the language in your everyday life is also a factor in the learning process. The time it takes to learn can depend on many other factors, for example how many and which other languages you speak.

Language is like a muscle, if you don’t train a little all the time you lose strength. The trick is to make language learning a part of everyday life.

Below is an estimation of the number of study hours (teacher-led and self-studies) that are needed to reach the different levels.
It differs from person to person, and this is an average estimation.

Language test

Would you like to test your language skill level in Swedish, English, or even Mandarin? Our language test gives an indication of where you are on the CEFR-scale, based on a series of questions and answers about what you understand and know about the language – easily and quickly. Our language coaches will always do a thorough evaluation of level and needs during the first lesson.

TEST YOUR LANGUAGE LEVEL

C1 certification for vocational licenses

Upgrades is approved by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare to test and certify Swedish skills for vocational licenses.

The C1-certification is an important key for accessing the work market and our certification test is specially developed by educated pedagogues according to the CEFR-scale level requirements.

The certification thoroughly encompasses all parts of the language:

Listening comprehension
Reading comprehension
Written assignment
Spoken communication

The test is done together with an experienced language coach, online or on location. The certification takes around 5 hours to complete and can be divided over 2 days if so wished.
